Terms of use
Short version: use Montage for what it is for, be decent about it, and understand that it is a young product that will change. The full terms follow; by creating an account or using Montage you agree to them.
Last updated October 2, 2026
1. Who we are
Montage (montagefilm.app, "Montage", "we", "us") reads the films you rate, from Letterboxd or in the app, to show you your taste in film: your archetype and Film DNA, a match score on every film, picks for tonight and the week, and movie nights planned with your friends. It is run from New York, USA. These terms are an agreement between you and us.
2. Your account
- You must be 16 or older to create an account.
- Give us accurate sign-in details and keep your sign-in to yourself. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
- One person, one account. Do not create accounts to get around a suspension or a block.
- Some features work without an account (rating films to find your cinema archetype, joining a movie night as a guest). These terms apply to that use too.
3. Your content
Your content is what you put into Montage: ratings, watchlist, your Canon and its notes, your bio, display name, handle and photo, group names and photos, messages and films you send in group feeds and movie night chats, your takes and replies in film discussions, your reactions, and anything you import from Letterboxd.
- It stays yours. You keep every right you have in it.
- The licence you give us. So the app can work, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, copy, process, adapt (for example resize a photo or shorten a line to fit a card) and display your content, within Montage and in the things Montage makes for you to share, such as your profile page, taste card, match card and emails. We use it to run, improve and promote Montage (for example, showing a public profile as an example), and for nothing else.
- When it ends. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies other people already received from you (a card you shared), copies in backups until they rotate out, and anything we must keep by law.
- Public and friends. A public profile can be seen by anyone with the link. People you follow who follow you back see the films you rate and watch unless you turn that off. Group members see what the group shows, including your messages and watch logs; members of a movie night see what you write in its chat; and both see whether you have read their messages. Choose what you publish with that in mind.
- Your responsibility. Only post and import what you have the right to. Do not post anything illegal, hateful, sexual, harassing, or that exposes someone else's private information.
- Reports and removal. We may remove content or limit an account that breaks these terms. Photos are checked automatically for nudity before they are saved.
4. Acceptable use
Do not:
- scrape, bulk-download or send automated requests to Montage, or use it to build a competing dataset;
- try to reach data that is not yours, probe or bypass security or rate limits, or reverse engineer the service;
- harass, threaten or impersonate anyone, or use groups, movie night chats, messages or film discussions to spam people;
- use Montage for anything unlawful.
5. Film data, Letterboxd and other services
- Film data, posters and images come from TMDB. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. Posters and stills belong to their owners.
- Montage is not affiliated with Letterboxd. When you ask, we read your public Letterboxd pages or an export you upload. You are responsible for importing only your own library.
- Links to trailers, streaming services or other sites are for convenience; we do not control them.
6. Recommendations and AI-written text
Match percentages, picks, archetypes and Film DNA are calculated by Montage's own algorithms from your ratings. Some written text, such as the descriptions of your taste and the lines on film pages, is generated by AI. All of it is an opinion, not a fact, and can be wrong; do not rely on it for anything important.
7. Copyright complaints
If you believe something on Montage infringes your copyright, email contact@montagefilm.app with: the work, where it appears on Montage, your contact details, a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised, and a statement under penalty of perjury that your notice is accurate and you are the owner or authorised to act for them. We remove material that is properly reported and may close repeat infringers' accounts.
8. Ending things
- You can delete your account at any time in Settings. That deletes your data as the privacy policy describes.
- We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts others at risk, or is required to be closed by law. Where reasonable we will tell you why.
- We may change, pause or stop any part of Montage, or Montage itself. If we shut down, we will give at least 30 days' notice where we can.
9. No warranty
Montage is provided as is and as available. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises that it will be available, accurate, secure or free of errors, and no implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a purpose or non-infringement.
10. Limits on liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Montage is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, profits or goodwill. Our total liability for any claim about Montage is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the last 12 months or US$50. Montage is free today, so in practice that is the fixed amount. Some places do not allow these limits; where that is so, they apply only as far as allowed.
11. Indemnity
If someone brings a claim against us because of content you posted or your breach of these terms, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it, to the extent the law allows.
12. Disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, USA. Any dispute goes to the state or federal courts in New York County, New York, except that either of us may bring a claim in small-claims court. Before filing anything, please email us so we can try to sort it out.
If you live in the EU or UK, nothing here removes the protections of your local consumer law or your right to bring a claim in your local courts.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. For a material change we will tell you in the app or by email at least 14 days before it takes effect. If you keep using Montage after that, the new terms apply; if you do not agree, you can delete your account.
14. The rest
These terms and the privacy policy are the whole agreement between us about Montage. If a part is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term right away, we can still enforce it later. You may not transfer these terms; we may transfer them if Montage is sold or reorganised.
15. Contact
Anything about these terms: contact@montagefilm.app.
